OpenAI is bringing new, more visually-oriented ad formats to ChatGPT. In a blog post published on Monday, the company announced that it will begin testing a new ad format within the chatbot from the end of this month...

TL;DR OpenAI is launching a new visual advertising format in ChatGPT, starting with U.S. users who request image generation. The ads will be clearly labeled, separate from the image, and will not affect chatbot responses. Existing ad placements beneath replies remain unchanged, and ads are excluded for paid subscribers and sensitive topics.

Key Highlights • New visual ads appear when users request images via ChatGPT Images. • Only U.S. customers will see these ads initially. • Ads are clearly labeled and kept separate from the generated image. • Existing text ads under chatbot replies remain for free users only. • Ads are omitted for Plus/Pro/Enterprise subscribers and in sensitive conversations.

New Visual Ad Formats in ChatGPT

OpenAI announced on Monday that it will begin testing a new type of advertisement inside ChatGPT later this month. The first users to encounter these ads will be ChatGPT customers in the United States. The ads will appear when a user requests the creation of an image through ChatGPT Images. According to the company, the advertisements will be clearly labeled and kept separate from the generated image. OpenAI emphasized that, as with previous ad formats, the ads will not influence the responses provided by the chatbot.

The company first introduced advertising in ChatGPT at the beginning of the year. Those ads appear in a sponsored section beneath the chatbot’s replies, displaying the sponsor’s name, logo, and a link to the advertiser’s website. OpenAI claims that incorporating visuals helps users better imagine how the promoted products or services might fit into their lives. Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus or Pro, as well as Enterprise customers, will not see these advertisements.

OpenAI is currently testing the visual ads with a select group of advertisers and plans to experiment with additional formats in the future. The company also reiterated that it continues to apply safeguards to ensure ads are shown only in conversations where they are deemed “appropriate.” For instance, when users discuss sensitive topics such as personal health or mental health, ChatGPT will not display advertisements.
