Anthropic Introduces “Mods,” a Middleware System That Runs Directly Inside Claude Code.

TL;DR Anthropic has launched a new middleware called Mods for Claude Code, letting developers customize the tool’s interface and behavior with JavaScript/TypeScript functions. Mods can add panels, intercept tool calls, and introduce new commands, but they run with user permissions and should only be sourced from trusted places. The first official Mod, “You Should Know,” alerts users to important information missed by Claude.

Key Highlights • Mods let developers add custom panels, intercept tool calls, and create new commands in Claude Code. • Mods are JavaScript/TypeScript functions bound to events such as tool calls, prompts, and interface creation. • Built‑in features like the /diff command are already implemented as Mods. • Mods run with user permissions, not in a sandbox, so they must be loaded from trusted sources. • The first official Mod, “You Should Know,” monitors Claude’s outputs and sends a heads‑up message for missed important info.

Anthropic has introduced a type of middleware called “Mods” that runs directly inside the tool for Claude Code. This plugin-based system allows developers to change the appearance and behavior of Claude Code. Mods consist of JavaScript or TypeScript functions that are bound to specific events, from tool calls to user prompts and interface creation. This means developers can add custom panels next to the chat window, intercept tool calls, or define entirely new commands. The company notes that some built-in features, such as the /diff command, are already built as Mods.

Anthropic provides Mod examples on GitHub. Mods run with the user's permissions and are not kept in an isolated environment (sandbox). Therefore Anthropic warns users to load them only from trusted sources. Mods work in the CLI, desktop application, and partially in the VS Code extension. Organizations can control which Mods are allowed to be installed.

The first official Mod plugin is called “You Should Know.” This plugin starts a separate agent that monitors the outputs generated by Claude and sends a “Heads up” message when it detects important information that users might have missed. You can enable this plugin with the /plugin enable cc-plugin-you-should-know@builtin command.
